Lots And Lots Of Props

Thanks to our Queen of Props Carla, she guided us and put the most effort into creating the props for our performance. The props needed were these:
20 Coins
2 Coin Blocks
1 Coin box
1 Green Tube
2 Bushes
2 Pillars
3 keys
1 Portal
Knowing that our list of props was really long, we started early. First, we worked on the coins. However, problem arose when we kept running out of gold spray paint and had to improvise with yellow. Luckily, the coins all turned out great at the end!
With the bushes and pillars we did a similar technique of layering the cardboard for the structure and wrapping the surface with mahjong paper to make it easier to spray. Carla had the idea of layering the bushes to give it an illusion that there’s more. It also looked more attractive as it was less 2-dimensional.
We decided agains doing the green tube as we were afraid we didn’t have enough time, and we realised that we should be spending more time on the rehearsals than the props. Instead of using a green tube, which is something that Tyson (mario) is supposed to pop out of, we used a chair as an alternative and placed a bush in front of it.
The portal was a bit flimsy and it was very risky to hold it. Our greatest fear was that it would break before the performance even began, or that it wouldn’t work properly during the performance. We were running short on time so we couldn’t make another one as a test. We tried layering the sides with cardboard hoping that it would make it last longer, now all we have to do is pray that it won’t break during the performance day…
The props, although took many hours and days to make, was one of our best accomplishments out of this performance and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without Carla :)
