For our first lesson we were given a brief outline about what was in stored for us for this semester. Mr Charles explained the assignments, all of which involves group work. Although I was a little disappointed since I expected at least some individual work, I look forward to working with my course mates and the journey that we will all take together.

He then talked to us about what being a design student/designer means, which I found very eye-opening. There were a lot of points he made which changed my perspective on certain things. For example, we watched a video about One Punch Man, an anime about an overpowered man who fights monsters. We were asked about our first impressions when we saw his character design. Many responded that he seemed heroic because of his cape or the fact that he fights monsters. However, upon closer inspection, the protagonist had a rather bored expression while fighting, this may be because he was so powerful that there was no challenge he couldn't face. The protagonist's expression suggested that he was unsatisfied with the outcome. Mr Charles then explained because of this, it's possible that he wasn't a "hero" but he did out of responsibility. Someone then added to his point that a hero, no matter how powerful, would be happy that he defeated the monster because protecting the citizens would be their number one priority. This made me realise that we should observe carefully before making a judgement, although someone may dress a certain way it doesn't determine their character. Same goes for objects, while it may appear to look like it was designed for purpose A, if observed properly, it might actually be for purpose B.

Long story short, it was an enjoyable lesson and I can't wait for the rest of the semester :)
